Photos from our trip to Sabah in Malaysian Borneo

September 30 ~ October 3, 2004

On Wednesday, September 30, we took our first airplane trip with Emika. We flew from Hong Kong to Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo.

We stayed at the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort, between the airport and town. This is a picture from our patio.

Near Kota Kinabalu is a group of five islands, all contained within the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. These islands have good beaches, and some corral reefs for snorkeling.

We went for a small hike on the larger island, Pulau Gaya. The jungle looked mostly like primary growth, and there was quite a bit of garbage washed ashore.

Sabah has a large variety of landscapes. Pictured here is Mount Kinabalu. At a little over 4100 meters, it is the tallest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea. This picture was taken at sunrise from the resort boardwalk. The capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, is in the foreground.

Mount Kinabalu is a relatively easy mountain to climb. A national park has been named surrounding the mountain, and is one of the larger protected areas in Sabah.

Emika may have enjoyed the trip more than her parents. She had a great time, and seemed very happy to have so much play time with us.

At breakfast she had to be on our laps (oh goody), looking around and chewing on her fingers.

October 1st was the Mid-Autumn Festival in the Chinese calendar, and we celebrated with the traditional lantern and mooncake.
